A Trip to Catalina

Having an instinct for exploring I think is part of the reason I picked up a camera in the first place. Being able to freeze a moment that may be a completely new experience. The strongest urges to take a photo happen most when we travel out of our normal element, when we explore, put ourselves in different situations. That way when we “snap” the picture we can be able to prove and say “I did that”, “I was there” or “that happened”, preserving a memory.

A trip to Catlina Island did just that for me. Located off the coast miles southwest of Los Angeles, this channel island is known for its spectacular views of the ocean, wildlife, beach spots and a grand ballroom casino placed just off the harbor. A a California native I figured it was about time to see this Island that seemed very far away (even though it wasn’t at all).

Packed with my Canon EOS RP, EF 50mm 1.8 lens, and my GoPro 7 Black, I figured it would be fun to make a Vlog about this travel and to take some pictures around the main city of Avalon located at the Island. This time I was not alone however and had my girlfriend Megan to help me with taking some B-roll footage and locate some scenic spots including the Wrigley memorial at the Island.

The city of Avalon actually made for some good street photography since it’s bustling people visiting the shops, restaurants and hotels. Tourists come and walk around trying to find their destinations, and perhaps even stop by and walk along the sandy shores of the beaches that are a short walk away.

Meanwhile I was walking around exploring the city through the lens of my camera and seeing what would make for a good picture. I was surrounded by that “So-Cal” vibe as I took pictures of the beach, boats, and architecture that surrounded the island.

Visiting Catalina is a fun adventure I’d recommend to anyone wanting nice ocean views and I plan on going again sometime soon. If you can’t handle the boat ride there I suggest taking a Dramamine.
