Disneyland POV Photography

The happiest place on earth actually makes a nice backdrop for some interesting photography. Unlike most other theme parks Disneyland features plenty of photo ops due to its many themed sections of the park from Buena Vista St. to Pixar Pier to Cars Land.

During the time of this particular video the ghostsly decorations were all around due to it being Halloween-Time. On that October day I visited the park it was actually quite bright and sunny however, that would change drastically later on in the evening.

When taking pictures you can assume that 100% of the time there will be people in the background of your shot, which doesn’t work to well if you plan to take some solo shots. Yet, as someone who shoots street photography i’m used to, in fact, I aim to get people in the shot. Which is why I thought the concept for this video was a good idea.

During the day I mostly shot around the park, capturing large displays that were in season. I’ll admit the photos I were getting were not so interesting, they wouldn’t catch the eyes of many people, especially if those people had no interest in Disneyland. (Yes people like that do exist) But, the most awesome pics I snapped did come later on at night, when the clouds in the sky darkened to an angry shade of grey and random strikes cracked open the sky with blinding flashes.

Yes, a thunderstorm. In California. The one day I had chosen to go to Disneyland with my girlfriend turned into a wet and flooded hail-storm with lightning and thunder. Forcing me to tuck my camera gear away into my pack. Meanwhile we tried to entertain ourselves by going on the attractions, yet even that was proving to be difficult as we were becoming drenched and smacked with ice balls from the sky.

Luckily…the storm did break. Around 9 O’clock the rain refrained for a while, leaving everything in the park glistening. This was the perfect photography moment, as I took out my camera again to capture pictures. This time thinking with a different composition in mind, using the reflections in puddles left by the rain to my advantage. As a bonus the storm caused many park-goers to leave early and left many spots free of crowds.

Guess the point of this blog is good things can come from unexpected occurrences.
